Day 19 of my drawing challenge "Draw something im afraid of" This face has haunted me since i first saw it in the 7th grade... No doubt the scariest thing ive ever seen! lol
It is good, so good that I can remember having seen this face. Must have been in a horror movie in the 70's/80's around but I cannot think of the title or what especially it was about, just being reminded of the face and the girl.
To me it looks clearly that the girl must either be a zombie or being infested by some inhabitant, eating her up from inwards to outwards.
The picture really looks scary. I guess that is the effect it should cause. I nice idea for Halloween. Scars in her face and rotten flesh really makes her looking sick and ugly.
The effects are good created. The scars are really looking like deeply engraved into the skin and the holes really look like some opening gaps. When you put your fingers into one of the holes, you can peel the skin off.
Colours are very well chosen. Mostly dark for beeing mysterious and eerie. The green gives really the effect of "compost", something that rots. Interesting are the brown eyes. They look malicious on one side and on the other the amber is soft and a bit helpless.
I was actually here for Halloween and costume day at my school in 2009. I ended up scaring a senior. I never really liked her and I was terrible terrified of her. I got over my fear by being her.
To be honest this is very good. But you asked about photorealism, so...
I would say the number one thing you could do to make it look more realistic is texture. Especially of the skin. Take this [link] by *DarthFar for example. (He's AMAZING). See all the different colors that he uses for skin tone, and how the multiple layering and movement of the lines gives it that "real" look? Also, look how detailed he makes every little crevice, wrinkle and bump on the face. Its that level of detail that makes it appear at first glance like a photo. There's little adjustments of the facial anatomy that don't...quite fit together on your piece, but its the overly slick feel to it that most detracts from the realistic feel.
I dunno if that helps...but. The best way to improve is to take a class that makes you work on the same damn picture for hours. Like 10+.
I too want to learn about it. So far I've found this tutorials about skin texture: with brushes, with shades and noise, with shading, spots and creases. Also, ~navate is preparing a big tutorial about skin, and the IV section of it will be "Building a skin tone, blending and texturing. The technical section showing how to paint skin start to finish." So far we have only 2 first available. Here is the I part.

All in one - a great digital work!
